Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at Age 89.
This Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran passed away 89 years old.
This actor, with roles spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was shared via an announcement shared by her child, Academy Award-winning star her daughter Laura Dern.
Her daughter, who performed alongside her mother in several movies such as Wild at Heart, called her “my amazing hero as well as my profound gift as a mother”, noting that she was by her side as she died.
“She was the most wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, actress, artist along with empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
Ladd’s early career saw supporting roles in TV shows including Gunsmoke and that decade had her appearing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. The performance earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
Subsequent Years
During the eighties, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story plus humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on Alice, a sitcom inspired by the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she was given a further supporting actress nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her real-life daughter Laura Dern’s role. A year later she received an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose which included Dern.
“This was the film which Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she invited Laura and I to London for a special screening and an event for us,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, with tears, viewing our performance.”
That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Laura Dern’s mom another time. The decade also earned her Emmy nominations for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.
Partnerships with Her Daughter
She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She also appeared next to actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian and Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Her more recent television parts included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
Writing and Directing
She additionally penned and helmed the comedy Mrs Munck, a film which starred herself and ex-husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is a great actor,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. Indeed, I am the sole female in recorded history to helm a film with her ex. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”
Personal Life
Ladd was also a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a great influence throughout my life”.
In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and advised her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely after her daughter moved her to a different hospital.
