Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
