Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Support Following PSV Loss
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it's expected for concerns to be asked about his future following another heavy defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie champions on a tough evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received a lot of support from above,” Slot remarked.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and get a victory of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my position. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Talks with The Board
When asked to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don't phone me every single minute each day to say they trust me.”
He added, “Through standard exchanges I sense the trust. However I've not talked to them since this defeat so far so we'll see.”
Familiar Failings and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over recurring weaknesses from his team in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He went on, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a phase such as this with results so bad.”
Jones stated, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until that badge is taken away, we’re always going to fight.”
“We will attempt to get this team back to the top, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
