The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
