The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Complete Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to perform what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
