The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
