This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
