Zohran Mamdani affirms his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, was not quick to announce he would live there right away after his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
